Planning Individual Magazine Advert - Miss Georgiou

Magazine adverts are important in promoting an artist's album because they create a visual element to the promotion of the artist and their music. This means the advert will be more bold and memorable for the audience and that they get more of an understanding about the artists image and music style through the visuals; typography and images etc. Magazine adverts are effective because they allow the artist to create connotations about themselves and their music without straightforwardly stating it. For example, an advert could include a face-on close up to suggest that the artist is serious.

I will be creating my own magazine advert for my chosen artist 'Kerry'. The advert will entail a mid-shot image of the artist wearing indie-style clothes with naturally wavy hair and relatively subtle make-up or red lipstick. The artists name and single located at the top of the page and the album name and further details at the bottom. The picture of the artist will be layered with loss of small images of either memories or the same picture of the artist. This will create a disillusioned effect as though the artists head is spinning with memories. This is conventional to our music video because the theme is reminiscing on memories. Planning is important in order to create a magazine advert because you need to consider all aspects you will include in order to ensure they are successful and effective and decide how you will make them conventional to the indie genre as well as represent the artist in a way you would wish too.

I have decided to use mostly simplistic colours in my poster because it makes the advert clear and bold for the audience so it is not too busy or complicated to interpret. Simplicity is also conventional to the indie genre because indie artists tend to have a natural stripped-back style in terms of their image and music because they write their own songs and tend to have acoustic performances. Also they do not wear flamboyant clothes or make-up like those in a mainstream music genres such as pop and instead they often wear minimal make-up and quirky clothes.

A colour that I have decided to use is blue and will be seen on the artists clothing as I have decided that she will wear a denim dress which give the advert a variety of connotations that are conventional to the indie music genre. Blue has connotations will portray negative emotions such as sadness and loneliness which suggest the artist experienced these emotions in the relationship she sings about. This colour is conventional to the indie music genre because artists in this genre often sing about personal experiences as they write their own songs and as a result a majority of the indie songs are about negative experiences and so you would expect them to use the colour blue to connote their emotions. The denim has a worn and old effect which is relevant to my music video because the artist is singing about old memories and in a sense the relationship was worn and damaged because it eventually ended.
On the advert the artist will also wear red lipstick. There are many connotations of this colour; both positive and negative. Red represents intense emotion of love and passion can portray the artist and her boyfriends emotions throughout their relationship. Contrastingly red is representative of danger and so shows the problematic side of the relationship being the artist feeling afraid to commit.
My magazine advert has conformed to the conventions of the indie genre through the use of the close-up. This is conventional to the indie genre as the artists tend to have niche audience and so are relatively unknown. Therefore close-ups are common in adverts as they allow the artist to introduce themselves to the audience.  One image will be used in my advert and it will be a close up of the artist which will direct the audiences focus onto the artist mainly and therefore allow them to understand her image and therefore make guesses about what her style of music will be like which will help them decide whether they want to buy into it or not.

I found this useful in relation to taking pictures for my advert because I now know exactly what I will want from the photographs I will take. I will also know how to edit my advert on photo shop as I have this drawing as a guideline to follow.

  1. This post demonstrates a basic understanding of how you visualise your magazine advert and this is because you have not explored all of the conventions. You have explored the role of the colours and connotations that you would like to include, but you also need to explore the language, layout, indie conventions and target audience, to complete this post.

    Aim-
    1) Refer back to the lesson and ensure all points are included
    2) Refer to specific examples from your research and explain what your ideas and inspirations are with planning your own product
